Kihnu Island, Estonia

This tiny island lies 7 miles off the east coast of Estonia. Home to just 400 people, this is a place where women rule in mostly everything. Like many sleepy towns, they hold up long-standing traditions pretty well. One such tradition is that Kihnu men spend months away fishing at sea for their families back in the island, while the women are in charge of leading the community and preserving its way of life. They still wear traditional clothing, ancient folk songs and dances are still being played at parties, and women are extremely skillful and independent. It’s an island worth visiting for its rich culture and heritage that even UNESCO has them on their list.
