United Way was doing a fundraiser and thought it was a good idea to grab the town’s attention by releasing 1.5 million balloons over Cleveland back in 1986. And so they did, and screwed up badly. The balloons fell into every nook and cranny of the town, creating massive trash accumulation, clogging of waterways, and even the death of two fishermen who were found two days after the event when the balloons stalled coast guard rescue operations. United Way ended up paying millions to the city, not to mention paying against lawsuits by citizens whose properties and businesses were significantly damaged by the balloon fest.
