Dancer Breaking Stereotypes By Being Plus-Sized

I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown up thinking ballet is only for the extremely skinny ones, or you’ll have to starve yourself until you are allowed to wear pink leotards and toe shoes.

But one 25-year-old man has recently made waves across the dance community by uploading a video of himself dancing to a routine he supposedly used for his audition for America’s Got Talent. He went viral ever since. Not only because he could dance extremely well, but because he is plus-sized!

Erik Cavanaugh, a dancer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is challenging the conventions of traditional dance. He has been advocating that dance can be accessible for anybody at any size and it’s not just limited to those that have the traditional ballet body, if you will, because there has been a lot of push against dancers with size.

Since then a lot of people have messaged Erik to express that his videos have given them the courage to take dance classes again, or to believe in themselves, or to not quit. There have been quite a few instances people would come up to him and say “I follow you on social media and you inspire me.” The plus-sized dancer is overwhelmed by the positive responses he has been getting, that people are able to believe in themselves again because they see that he’s pushing against the stereotype.
