When it comes to movies, all eyes are set on who will win the Oscars. The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, are a set of awards given for artistic and technical merit in the film industry.
This takes place every year and is distributed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Being the most prestigious award for films, the Oscars are the most coveted achievement there is in the world of film.
So when it comes to winning an Oscar, people take it VERY seriously. Everyone gets all tense when the envelope is handed to the presenters, opened, and announced. But there are moments when mistakes are inevitable, like how Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the Miss Universe winner during the 2015 contest.
One of the most epic and cringe-worthy fails in the history of the Academy Awards happened in the 2017 awarding ceremony, when several amazing films like La La Land, Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge, Moonlight, and several others were competing for Best Picture. During that year, La La Land had swept the awards, having 14 nominations and winning six of them already including Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress for Emma Stone’s performance.
When the presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway received the card, they were actually given the duplicate for the Best Actress card, so it contained Emma Stone’s name.
They immediately assumed it meant La La Land, since Emma Stone starred in the film, and it wasn’t surprising since La La Land has won so many awards already. What followed was applause and touching speeches from the team.
Then, confusion and a lot of whispering onstage. This ended up with an awkward announcement of Moonlight’s victory, and Jimmy Kimmel saving the day by jokingly blaming Beatty and breaking the tension.
